Among the top notch video game consoles, Wii makes a special mark as it is one of the few devices which can be used in diverse forms. The sales and popularity of this equipment has given Xbox and Playstation, a tough competition in the market. Playing video games through this device is definitely a fun filled experience but the question is, can this equipment be used beyond its usual capabilities? Can Wii play DVD?

The answer to this question is ‘yes’ and for that you have two methods. The first method requires you to do a one-time maneuver which is a bit tough and risky but will allow you to play DVDs seamlessly afterwards. The other method is safe but requires you to do a format conversion job every time you wish to play a new DVD.
Coming to the first method, you would need to change the settings of your equipment so that it can play DVDs seamlessly. For this you need to install a package called Homebrew on your console which will work as a small hidden channel facilitating DVD playback. For successfully installing Homebrew on your system, you must meticulously unlock the console. You should not buy any homebrew kit since all the required materials are available on the internet for free.
For the installation process you would require an SD card formatted into FAT16 file system. One of the popular sources for Homebrew installations is Bannerbomb. You can visit their site, download and unzip the whole package onto your SD card. Once done, turn on your Wii console and form the main menu go to “Data Management”, then “Channels” and then “SD” tab. Insert your SD card. You will be prompted to load the boot.dol/elf file. Follow the instruction from thereon. Detailed step by step guidelines can be found on various internet sites.
It must be noted that Homebrew is not endorsed by Nitendo that the manufacturer of Wii. Hence it doesn’t expect either that individual users would install the same. Any attempt at unlocking the console would result in the breakage of warranty seal and hence you may lose your warranty prematurely. Moreover, any updates done by Nintendo might destroy your Homebrew channel and hence you should never update your Wii software. To prevent automatic updates, turn off the WiiConnect24 auto updater. You can find it in Wii Settings tab on Wii Options panel.
There is one more way through which you can enable DVD playback on your Wii console without tampering the hardware. This is completely a risk free tactic. For this, you need to convert your DVD into a Wii compatible format through a third party software called DVD to Wii converter. This conversion software allows you to download multiple full DVDs onto its profile and convert them into supported formats in one go. The wii play dvd process doesn’t deteriorate the quality of output video but takes up a considerable amount of time. Once converted, it can be transferred to an SD card which can then be inserted into your console’s SD slot and played back easily.
